He fought the good fight longer than most and has earned his rest. But the world is a little poorer for this loss…thanks for the memories and all of the incredible music, Sam.
Sam Rivers. RIP.
I remember years of knocking off at the radio station as early as I could so I could get to the Sapphire Supper Club to watch you do your residency with your 17 piece and your 3 piece. I must’ve seen you a hundred times. I even saw the amazing tour de force you put on at the last show at the old Will’s Pub…I don’t think the show was over until 5am, and there you were with energy like a teenager. You put us all to shame. I also had the pleasure of having you as a customer at the store I work at, where you have always been kind and decent and willing to tell me stories about jazz in the old days.
So passes a giant. You will be missed, but thank you so much for all of the wonderful music.
Ryan Adams- “Black Sheets of Rain” live on Letterman.
So…I don’t generally like Ryan Adams but whoa…him covering my favorite Bob Mould song is a different thing entirely.

El Tambor
Mi cuerpo convoca la llama.
Mi cuerpo convoca los humos.
Mi cuerpo en el desastre
como un pajaro blando.
Mi cuerpo como islas.
Mi cuerpo junto a las catedrales.
Mi cuerpo en el coral.
Aires los de mi bruma.
Fuego sobre mis aguas.
Aguas irreversibles
en los azules de la tierra.
Mi cuerpo en plenilunio.
Mi cuerpo como las codornices.
Mi cuerpo es una pluma.
Mi cuerpo al sacrificio.
Mi cuerpo en la penumbra.
Mi cuerpo en claridad.
Mi cuerpo ingravido en la luz
vuestra, libre, en el arco.

There’s an immediacy and a starkness that’s there. I think a lot of Leadbelly’s arrangements and his use of the 12-string guitar were atypical, especially the 12-string, which showed his individuality. I guess he approached it that way because the 12-string was louder. Leadbelly and the punk rock aesthetic - maybe there are some similarities there.
